Budget > Cost Cutting Ideas > Cable, Phone
& Laundry
Phone - Limit unnecessary long distance calls. Look for a long
distance provider that offers you the most favorable rate. If family members
are overusing the phone, create guidelines concerning phone use. Often, long
distance providers will give better rates on certain days of the week. Example:
If your provider offers 10-cent Sundays, limit your long distance calls to
Sundays, if possible. Pit the long distance providers against each other and do
competitive rate comparisons. Carriers often engage in “rate wars” that you
might be able to take advantage of.
Cable Bills - Analyze your cable package. Do you really need all of the
channels that you are paying for, or can you downgrade to a cheaper cable
package? Can you do without cable TV? Remember, the more television you watch,
the more temptation you will face from marketing and advertisements.
Laundry/Cleaning - Look for the cheapest dry cleaning service. Many dry
cleaners will handle any item for only $1. When doing laundry try to only wash
full loads. You will you save money, on the water and electric bill and on
detergent. If you do not have a washer and dryer, consider paying for your
laundry by the pound instead of using coin-op machines. It may be cheaper and
you won’t have to do the laundry yourself or pay for detergent or laundry
products. Buying laundry detergent in bulk will save money.
