Guidelines for Dealing with Collectors

Try to avoid paying by personal check. If you send a personal check, the creditor will know where you bank and will acquire your account number. There is often personal information on checks such as your address, telephone number, and the name of other friends or family members who may be making a payment for you. Collectors may use the information on your check to obtain additional information or attach your bank account.

You do not have to give personal information over the phone. Collectors may try to bully you into giving personal information over the phone. If a collector asks for employment, bank account, or personal information, don't give it to them. They may use the information to attach your wages or bank account.

You don't have to give them your address. If you are sending payment to a collector and do not want them to know your address, do not include a return address. Though not giving your address can be an effective way of avoiding creditors, it may work against you because you will not receive notice about the status on your account.
